400 Years Completed: A Legacy of Faith Crowned in Gratitude

On 16th October 2025, the parish of St. Francis Xavier Church Chicalim brought to a solemn and joyful conclusion its Quadricentennial Jubilee, completing 400 years of Christian faith in Chicalim.

The historic celebration was presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman. His presence marked the spiritual culmination of a year that had been filled with prayer, reflection, unity, and renewal.

A Grand Welcome for the Shepherd of the Archdiocese

Cardinal Ferrão arrived in the evening and was warmly received by Parish Priest Fr. Bolmax Pereira, parish leaders, and representatives of the community. A floral welcome was offered as a gesture of gratitude and respect.

Parish youth carrying Jubilee crosses accompanied the Cardinal into the church, creating a moving visual reminder of the year-long spiritual journey. At the entrance, children of the parish expressed their joy through a graceful welcome dance, symbolizing the pride of a community completing four centuries of faith.

Former parish priests who had served Chicalim over the decades were also present, along with clergy, religious sisters, and members of the Mormugao deanery. Civic representatives, the state Member of Parliament, Captain Viriato Fernandes and members of the Panchayat joined the faithful, highlighting how deeply the parish is woven into the life of the village.

Nearly 600 parishioners gathered, filling the church with gratitude and celebration.

A Homily Rooted in Faith and Unity

In his message, Cardinal Ferrão reminded the faithful that faith is a precious gift entrusted to us by Christ. It must be nurtured daily through personal prayer, family prayer, Scripture, and participation in the Eucharist, where believers encounter Jesus Himself.

Reflecting on the missionary zeal of Francis Xavier, he described the saint as a man “on fire with the love of Christ,” who carried the Gospel to the coastal communities with courage and sacrifice. He recalled how St. Francis Xavier endured hardship, lived simply, and remained steadfast in mission, becoming a living example of faith in action.

The Cardinal emphasized that through Baptism, all Christians are brothers and sisters. He called upon families to become schools of faith, reminding the congregation that the family is the first and foundational Christian community. From strong families grow strong parish communities.

He urged the faithful to be builders of fellowship, extinguishing division and spreading peace in their homes, workplaces, and society. The 400-year legacy, he said, is not only history but responsibility. It is a treasure handed down by ancestors, to be preserved through love, unity, and service.

A Choir that Carried the Jubilee in Song

A special highlight of the concluding celebration was the parish choir, beautifully trained and guided by Rev. Fr. John Albano Fernandes. Under his patient direction and musical vision, the choir prepared diligently for this historic occasion, offering hymns that were both prayerful and uplifting.

Fr. John himself accompanied the choir on the keyboards, weaving harmonies that enriched the liturgy and deepened the atmosphere of thanksgiving. Their voices resonated through the church with reverence and joy, transforming the Eucharistic celebration into a profound experience of worship. Unveiling the 400-Year Commemorative Coffee Table Book

One of the most anticipated moments of the evening was the unveiling of the commemorative coffee table book chronicling 400 years of Christian faith in Chicalim.

The publication beautifully captures the parish’s journey through archival records, testimonies of priests and elders, memories of musicians and sports personalities, and images reflecting the natural beauty and sacred heritage of Chicalim. It is not merely a book, but a living archive of resilience, devotion, and community spirit.

As the Cardinal unveiled the volume, the parish celebrated not just a publication, but the preservation of its identity for generations to come.

A Sacred Relic for the Parish

A deeply reverent moment followed with the ceremonial presentation of a relic from the Basilica of Bom Jesus.

The relic, a piece of wood from the coffin of St. Francis Xavier, was presented by the Rector, Rev. Fr. Patricio Fernandes, SJ, and received by Fr. Bolmax Pereira on behalf of the parish.

For a parish named after St. Francis Xavier, this gift carries profound spiritual meaning. It now stands as a sacred treasure for the faithful of Chicalim, strengthening their connection to the missionary saint whose legacy shaped the faith of Goa.

As the relic was displayed before the faithful, silence filled the church. It was a moment of awe, gratitude, and deep spiritual emotion.

Celebrating Talent and Gratitude

During the concluding ceremony, the year-long Jubilee report was presented, summarizing the many spiritual initiatives, sector gatherings, family participation, and community outreach activities conducted throughout the year.

A special Jubilee song composed for the occasion was released and performed, filling the church with joyful melody. The creators of the Jubilee logo and contributors who added artistic beauty to the celebrations were also felicitated, acknowledging their dedication and creativity.

These gestures reflected the collaborative spirit that sustained the entire Jubilee Year.

Cardinal Ferrão concluded the Eucharistic celebration with a solemn blessing upon the faithful, invoking God’s grace upon the parish as it enters a new chapter beyond the 400-year milestone.
