A Journey of Faith, Love, and Transformation

How We Met

We are Afzal and Gemma, and our story began in Bangalore in May 2023. I was working there, and Afzal had come to visit his brother. We were introduced through a group outing, but we didn’t really talk until the day before he was due to leave.

The next day, Afzal returned to Dubai, and I didn’t expect to hear from him again. But to my surprise, he messaged me on Instagram, which led to us exchanging WhatsApp numbers. From then on, our conversations became constant. His kindness, humor, and thoughtfulness made me feel cared for, and I grew fonder of him each day.

Facing Doubts

What truly made me comfortable was how easy it was to communicate with him. I felt I could share anything without fear of judgment. That openness and trust became the foundation of our relationship.

Still, I had doubts. Afzal came from a different religion, and faith is central to my life. When I shared my concerns, he listened with respect and understanding. Soon after, he suggested coming to Goa to talk face to face, and he did just that.

During that visit, he told me how he had once accompanied a neighbor to church during his college years in Goa, and how she used to joke that he would marry a Christian girl. That memory showed me his openness to faith, even before we began discussing it seriously.

The Baptism Journey

Afzal was calm, understanding, and willing to embrace one faith for our future together. His promises gave me strength, and through prayer, we found clarity.

The baptism process was challenging. My mother connected us with Father Bolmax Pereira, Parish Priest of Chicalim Church, who guided us through catechism classes along with Father Peter. These sessions deepened our faith and brought us closer to each other.

A Sacred Maundy Thursday Experience

One of the most unforgettable moments in our journey was Maundy Thursday. Afzal was given the incredible opportunity to serve as an Apostle during the mass. As the ceremony began, it felt like a living connection to the Bible. Just as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, Father Bolmax humbly kissed the feet of the Apostles.

The symbolism and deep sense of humility we experienced that night left a lasting impression on our hearts. It reminded us that true love is rooted in humility and service.

Baptism Night

On Easter night, March 31, 2024, Afzal was baptized during the midnight mass. The Chicalim Church community welcomed us with love, and it felt like we had found a new family.

Afzal became a catechumen, a word I learned that night. It means someone who is on the journey to becoming a baptized Christian. Over time, he shared how the Bible transformed his view of life, prayer, and relationships. We now pray together daily and make it a point to attend church.

Marriage and Beyond

Later, on December 29, 2024, we were married at St. Francis Xavier’s Church in Chicalim.

This journey was not easy. Afzal changed his surname to Daniel for the sake of our future children, left his job in Dubai, and dedicated himself to learning about our faith. His sacrifices and patience showed me how blessed I am to have him.

Through it all, I realized how important it is to stay connected to the church community. Faith is more than rituals; it is guidance, strength, and belonging.
