Transmitting Jesus

By Ana Smriti Paes

A year ago, the pandemic induced lockdown caused the closure of churches. The faithful in Chicalim, like elsewhere in the world were barred from experiencing Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of Catholic worship. It was in this situation that the Transmission Team, SFX Chicalim was born on 21st March 2020. Initially comprising of Nathaniel Nunes, Steven Vaz, Myron Lucas, Mr Cecilio Nunes, Mr Francis Fernandes and Fr Bolmax Pereira, as the lockdown progressed new members Atish Vaz, Elrica Rodrigues and Fr Peter Fernandes were added to the team.

It was through their dedicated efforts every single day that a majority of Chiklekars and others from around the world remained invigorated in faith during some of the most difficult times this generation has known. Every morning at 7:00 am, the Eucharist reached our devices and we participated with reverence from the comfort of our homes. Anyone and everyone who requested for prayer heard their names and intention called out during mass. Very regularly, in the evening, we spent time before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, pleading for mercy for a wounded world. The transmission team also made available to us the Way of the Cross during Lent and the Rosary during the month of May. Besides the spiritual services, we were also kept aware of happenings in society through creative messages and videos. The team worked hard to create a close-knit online community, strengthened by the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the year, the team faced many challenges. A few of them were the challenges of internet connection, proper sound and camera systems and electricity. Yet, by collaboration and perseverance they managed to transmit Jesus faithfully. A year later, we take this opportunity to thank them wholeheartedly for all they have done for us, the virtual congregation. We also thank them for participating in the physical services on our behalf, lifting up our prayers to the Lord in the Holy Sacrament. May God bless them!
